Like all branches of medicine, cosmetic surgery is constantly evolving, leading to better results for you. Procedures that have been around for years, or in some cases decades, have all been improved through advances in technology and cosmetic surgery techniques.
VASER LipoSelection is a body contouring procedure that does a far more precise job than traditional liposuction. It was approved by the FDA in September, 2002. VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, meaning that it uses ultrasound at a specific wavelength.
With early fat removal procedures, there was always the problem that tissue other than fat cells was traumatized, such as blood vessels, nerves, and lymph channels. That is much less of a problem with VASER.
At the Virginia Center for Plastic Surgery, we offer tumescent liposuction and that is an excellent procedure for the right candidate. VASER is for a different type of candidate. It is a true body sculpting procedure for those who would like a more athletic appearance.
How VASER LipoSelection Works
Ultrasound (sound energy inaudible to the human ear) is used to break up the fat cells. The ultrasound is administered through a small probe like a pencil inserted through a tiny incision. The proprietary probe does not burn any tissue. The ultrasound is tuned specifically to a wavelength which will preferentially disintegrate (emulsify) fat cells. If you think of a soprano who can break a fine wine glass by singing a certain note, you’ll get the idea.
As with Tumescent Liposuction, a saline solution is first infused into the area. Then the ultrasound probe breaks apart the fat cells. A disintegrated fat cell is one that has lost its cell membrane. That means the fat stored in the cell is now a liquid.
Dr. Desman can now gently use the proprietary VASER cannula to suction this fatty liquid out along with the saline solution. In some instances he might massage it out. The remaining tissue will reorganize itself with new little blood vessels and the skin will retract over the new shape.
Advantages of VASER
If you would like a lean, muscled appearance like “washboard abs”, VASER can precisely pick out the muscle contours by removing small, strategic areas of fat that have been obscuring them.
